The History of Wexford & New York
Where It All Started
The Wexford Association of N.Y. has been around since at least 1907, when records indicate a group of Model-County expats first came together to honor their county roots. It has been led by generation after generation ever since. Wexfordians and the Friends of Wexford get together and keep the traditions going. Over a century later, we're still here, still proudly marching with the flag of Commodore John Barry, born in Tacumshane, Co. Wexford, known as the Father of the American Navy.
Our Cousins
Wexford has been proudly represented by people of note near and far (including our members).
The Kennedys, specifically, trace their roots back to New Ross… just up the road from where a lot of our own families started. President Kennedy visited his ancestral home in Ireland in 1963.
When he died the following year, our Association had another grave to visit, right alongside Commodore Barry's. The connection between Wexford has not been lost to time; as members of the Kennedy family have joined us to celebrate Wexford on the walk up Fifth Avenue.
The Association Today
Every St. Patrick’s Day we march up Fifth Avenue behind our John Barry banner (still going after many generations!). Sun, rain, sleet; we have celebrated through it all.
We have celebrated with the Wexford Mens Hurling Team and visits from Wexford Officials… with plans for more!
